Toyota is working with Salesforce to create a new private social network called ‘Toyota Friend.’ The platform will give car owners the capability to receive messages from their vehicles.
Each car would have its own social profile and will send messages to its owner’s phone if, for example, the battery needs charging. The service will be available first in Japan on Toyota’s electric vehicles and hybrids next year.
Toyoto President Akio Toyoda explained:
Social networking services are transforming human interaction and modes of communication. The automobile needs to evolve in step with that transformation. I am always calling for Toyota to make ever-better cars. The alliance that we announce today is an important step forward in achieving that goal.
Toyota Friend will be available on smartphones, PCs, and other mobile devices. It will be powered by Salesforce Chatter, which we reported on back in February.
