Valve’s Steam digital game store/game launcher is, at this point, probably the most popular digital PC game store on earth, and it has spawned all kinds of exciting spin-offs from Steam Machines to new VR tech. But one of the most frustrating aspects of Steam, if you’re an Asia-based user, is that it doesn’t accept many Asian currencies and you have to buy games off of Steam in USD.
But that frustration should be a thing of the past pretty soon, as a leaked slide from Steam’s Dev Days conference shows that Valve is planning to add support for a bunch of new currencies in 2014. Among them: yen (Japan), rupiah (Indonesia), ringgit (Malaysia), peso (The Philippines), and baht (Thailand). That means that gamers from all of those countries will soon be able to buy games on Steam much more conveniently. (Oceania-based gamers should be pleased too, because Australia and New Zealand made the list as well).
It’s not clear from the leaked slide when in 2014 Steam will add these new currencies, so you may have a while to wait yet. And of course, it’s possible that between now and then, something could derail these plans. But it certainly seems likely that by next year’s Holiday sale, a lot of Southeast Asia will be getting in on the savings feast using their own currency for the first time. And that, my friends, is a very good thing!
