4 months after reaching 200 million, Line now has 300 million registered users

Line, the popular smartphone messaging app, has reached 300 million registered users today. The CEO of Line Corp took to Twitter to celebrate the newest milestone.
Line’s 300 million user-base comes almost exactly four months after reaching 200 million this summer. It took six months to grow from 100 million to 200 million, but only four months to make the next massive leap, so the app’s growth is clearly accelerating. (Update: Line says it’s aiming at 500 million in 2014, which seems mathematically inevitable at this growth rate anyway).

It would be useful if NHN’s Line Corp could reveal monthly active user numbers for Line, but sadly it sticks to only registered users which isn’t the best metric to use. In contrast, WhatsApp has over 350 million active users per month, while WeChat has 272 million active users. So both those apps are likely much larger in terms of active users than Line, but they’re mostly covering very different geographies.
Line brought in nearly $200 million in revenue for its parent company, Korea’s Naver, in the past three months.
