Singtel buys US cybersecurity firm for US$810M

Singtel, Singapore’s largest telco, has acquired US security services firm Trustwave for US$810 million, or a 98 percent stake. This is the latest in a series of moves to position the telco as a major cybersecurity player.

Trustwave specializes in threat prevention, proactive scanning and testing of databases to detect vulnerabilities, and helping firms deploy security best practices. The company’s chairman and CEO Robert McCullen will own the remaining two percent.

Singtel adds that it is still awaiting approval from regulators and third parties on the deal, but expects completion in three to six months. Trustwave will continue operating as a standalone business unit.

Cybersecurity complements Singtel’s existing suite of IT and cloud services targeted at enterprises, large organizations, and SMEs. Earlier this year, Singtel and cybersecurity firm FireEye launched the Advanced Security Operations Center in Singapore. The facility deals will help clients deal with denial of services attacks and advanced persistent threats.
