Singapore’s hawkers get centralized online selling support

“By the end of the year, customers of food delivery platforms [in Singapore] could have access to more hawker stalls under a common acquirer model piloted by online ordering platforms,” reported Today.

Details:

  • Singapore’s National Environment Agency and the country’s Infocomm Media Development Authority said that food delivery services run by Deliveroo, Foodpanda, Grab, and WhyQ will help onboard 400 stalls across 14 hawker centers onto their respective platforms.
  • Hawkers will be brought onto the food-selling platforms for free. WhyQ is set to receive orders and coordinate directly with stalls in hawker centers. Under the initiative, a single transaction made by a customer can include items from different hawker stalls.

Dive deeper:

  • This move addresses hawkers’ common pain points like the commissions that food platforms charge and technical challenges faced by hawkers, said the report.
  • The food industry has been one of the worst hit by the global pandemic, with stores unable to pivot online and forced to shut down.
