Sony Playstation 3: 80 million units sold, 300 game titles to be released this year
While Playstation fans are eagerly awaiting for the release of the Playstation 4 (PS4), Sony Computer Entertainment reminds us that its predecessor, the Playstation 3 (PS3) has not completely faded out of the picture. As of November 2, 2013, the Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) has sold 80 million units worldwide. Since its launch in 2006, the PS3 has released 4,332 game titles and saw 150 million cumulative registered accounts across 59 countries.
Not only is Sony’s the game console is doing great, its game titles are doing just as awesome. The Last of Us has sold 3.4 million copies in three weeks after its release on June 2013. The Journey, on the other hand, not only won six awards in the 3th annual Game Developers Choice Awards, but is also the first video game ever to be nominated for Best Score Soundtrack in the history of the Grammy Awards. Of course, who could forget other popular releases such as Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA5), Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, Batman: Arkham Origins and Call of Duty: Ghosts, all of which contributed to the increase in sales of the PS3.
In its seventh year, the PS3 is still going strong. So much so that there will be a whopping 300 PS3 titles to be released worldwide just in time for the upcoming holiday season. This includes the much-awaited Gran Turismo 6, which is set to release on December 6. In total, the Gran Turismo franchise has sold over 70 million copies worldwide. Happy holidays, indeed!
Of course, the PS3 is not without competition. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has not fallen far behind. The XBOX 360 has sold over 79 million units in its lifetime and should also reach the 80 million mark pretty soon.
