If you’re a procrastinator like me and still haven’t gotten your Neo Geo X Gold handheld console, chances are you’re not going to get it at all.
SNK Playmore, the company who made the original Neo Geo, wants the newly revived Neo Geo X Gold off the shelves. Its licensing agreement with Tommo Inc., the folks who brought the Neo Geo X Gold back, was recently terminated, and SNK wants Tommo to “immediately cease any and all manufacturing, distribution, marketing and promotion and selling of the Licensed Products”.
This means that the console, reproduced arcade stick accessories, and game bundles will be pulled from retail shelves. The handheld’s second lease on life began when the Neo Geo X Gold first went on sale December 18, 2012, and is already being snuffed out less than a year later.
As of this writing, the Neo Geo X Gold console is still available on Amazon.com, and can be gift wrapped to boot. Considering the agreement termination was announced nearly a week ago on October 2, Amazon is taking its time to take down the items. SNK has stated that “decisive measures will be taken” against continued sales of these ‘new’ Neo Geo products.
Hmm…I wonder what they’ll do.
