Razer to launch console based on Google’s latest Android TV operating system

At Google I/O, the internet giant’s developer-focused conference, Razer announced its intentions to release a gaming micro-console powered by Google’s Android TV operating system. Razer are best known for their range of PC peripherals, but also have a thriving business in gaming laptops. This latest device will be designed by the team behind the Razer Blade, Razer Blade Pro, and the modular PC prototype we covered a few months ago.

The as yet unnamed console can be controlled by any other Android device and also features voice controls, bringing it inline with Kinect’s functionality. The device will also be able to stream music, movies, and other apps designed for larger screens, but its focus will be on gaming. Razer assured fans that this won’t just be a console for the casual and will cater to hardcore and casual gamers alike “on one affordable system”.

Razer isn’t the first Asia-based company to announce it’s intention to launch an Android console; Huawei’s Tron, and ZTE’s Funbox already beat them to the punch. Razer does have the most experience in this field, and is also the first to announce the use of Android TV. The other consoles intend to use a heavily customised version of a previous Android operating system.

We currently have no information regarding control systems, specifications, or pricing of Razer’s latest device, but we have contacted Razer for clarification and will update as soon as we know more.
