CrossFire will re-launch in South Korea with new pop star characters

CrossFire is one of the world’s most popular free FPS games. But although the 2007 game was developed by the Korean company Smilegate, it hasn’t been operating in Korea since last year, when publisher Neowiz shut down its servers.

But now, CrossFire is coming back to Korea. In a new trailer produced in collaboration with the record label JYP Entertainment, pop acts Miss A and 2PM debut in their new roles as gunslingers. They will reprise in those roles in the game itself, where players will be able to select and play as the pop stars. According to the Korean gaming site This is Game, the developers are aiming for a December relaunch of the game in Korea, and the new characters will actually be available to Chinese players first. Here’s the trailer:

So will the addition of sexy celebs be enough to bring Korean gamers back to the CrossFire, especially in this era of free-to-play dominance? It remains to be seen, but CrossFire will certainly be facing more competition now than after its initial launch in 2007.
