8th. Philippines unveils startup roadmap, pushes for senate bill

At the third Geeks on a Beach international conference in Boracay in August, the Philippine government and stakeholders of the country’s startup community unveiled a roadmap for developing the local startup ecosystem.
The document will be the basis of a startup bill filed in the Senate, raising optimism that much-needed policies such as tax breaks and incentives will finally be laid down.

7th. Groupon to cut 1,100 jobs, exit 7 countries
This year saw daily deals giant Groupon cut 1,100 jobs and close down operations in seven countries, including the Philippines, as the company struggled with slowing growth.
Rich Williams, the company’s chief operating officer, explained: “We’ve taken a close, honest look at where we do business. We saw that the investment required to bring our technology, tools, and marketplace to every one of our 40-plus countries isn’t commensurate with the return at this point. We believe that in order for our geographic footprint to be an even bigger advantage, we need to focus our energy and dollars on fewer countries.”
Groupon shut its doors in the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Morocco, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay.
