Nearly half way through its life, Samsung sells 40 million Galaxy S4

Nearly every smartphone in Hong Kong is a big-screen Samsung.

Samsung CEO JK Shin has told a Korean newspaper that the firm has sold just over 40 million Galaxy S4 smartphones. This comes nearly half way through the phone’s annual product cycle.

Samsung (005930:KS) sold about 10 million of the S4 in its first three weeks, 20 million after two months, and 30 million after four months. Growth in sales has clearly slowed.

The Korean giant is hoping to reach 100 million S4 units sold, a feat which would represent double the global sales of its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. But slowing sales look set to scupper that plan.

The Galaxy S4 went on sale in South Korea on April 26, and promptly landed in the US, China, and India the next day ahead of a massive global roll-out backed up by major offline and online marketing. The big-screened S4 launched in Indonesia on May 3.
