The digital gap between regions in Indonesia has continued to shrink after the pandemic sped up the use of internet-based platforms across the country, according to the East Ventures Digital Competitiveness Index 2022.

Recently released by the Jakarta-headquartered VC firm, the report mapped out digital inclusion and competitiveness in the Indonesia’s 157 cities and regencies.
Internet users in the archipelago have been supporting the digital economy’s growth by using online services for news, shopping, socializing, and banking, the report found. It also noted that the median competitiveness score across regions reached 43.5, higher than 42.2 in 2021.
At the same time, the divide between the digital competitiveness scores of the top ranked and bottom ranked areas narrowed. The shrinking gap indicates that the groups in the middle and bottom of the list are growing and catching up to the top-ranked cities and regencies, East Ventures said.
Cities and regencies in the Greater Jakarta area along with the Java region continued to top the list.
Digital competitiveness in other provinces also went up as human resources and digital literacy improved, said Willson Cuaca, the VC firm’s co-founder and managing partner. The growth was also supported by information and communication technology spending as well as wage increase in digital economy sectors, he added.
