Steam apologizes for wrong game ratings in Indonesia

Valve Corporation, the parent company of gaming platform Steam, has apologized over an “error” that displayed inaccurate age ratings for games distributed across Indonesia.

The statement comes after some titles on Steam that contain mature content were deemed safe for children in Indonesia.

Valve said “incorrect and incomplete ratings” were temporarily shown on Steam between April 2 and April 5 due to a “technical bug and miscommunication.” These errors have since been taken down, the gaming company added, without clarifying the titles in question.

In the same statement, Valve said that it is taking steps to “fully generate and display Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS)-approved age ratings to customers in Indonesia.”

The IGRS was established to make sure that games are appropriate for the “cultural values of Indonesian society,” according to its page.

Operated by Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, the IGRS requires developers and publishers to submit a description form, upload clips of content and gameplay simulations, and fill out a classification questionnaire. Games will then be given an age rating as well as the applicable content classification labels.

The move comes as Indonesia set age restrictions on social media platforms in late March, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to do so.
