Toyota to build Lexus EV plant in Shanghai
Toyota has signed an agreement with the Shanghai government to advance green development and will establish a Lexus EV and battery facility in Jinshan District by 2027.
This marks a shift for Lexus, which has relied on imports, as Toyota strengthens its presence in China, the world’s largest new energy vehicle market.
Toyota is also expanding local R&D, with its Jiangsu-based Intelligent ElectroMobility R&D Center and partnerships with firms like Huawei for smart vehicle technologies.
Toyota will introduce China-specific electrified models in 2025 and targets at least 2.5 million annual vehicle production by 2030.
