Meta said to plan $10b global subsea cable project

Meta is reportedly planning to invest over US$10 billion in a new subsea cable spanning more than 40,000 kilometers.

This cable would be Meta’s first fully owned global infrastructure project, marking a shift in securing data traffic routes.

The project is in early stages, aiming to create a dedicated global data line for Meta.

Planned routes reportedly form a “W” shape, connecting the United States East Coast to India via South Africa and back to the United States West Coast through Australia. This design avoids areas like the Red Sea, South China Sea, and the Strait of Malacca.

Meta has previously been part of consortium-led projects like the 2Africa cable, but this would be its first sole ownership of such infrastructure.

Investments in subsea cables highlight the demand for efficient, secure data networks, showing tech companies’ growing independence from traditional telecom providers.
