NEW: Sensors Allow House To Tweet

TwitterDr Andy Stanford-Clark, a renown IBM engineer has placed hundreds of sensors in his 16th century cottage.

The sensors are used to keep track of every movement and energy use in the house. He intelligently managed to allow the sensors to transmit updates via Twitter.

Each sensor has its individual purpose. Some sensors report if a window is closed while others track energy consumption. Interestingly, one of the sensors works like a caller identification (Caller ID), informing Andy who’s the caller at the other end of his telephone (regardless if he picks it up or not)

His cottage is also filled with wireless switches that can remotely switch off his lights, heater and the pond fountain via his mobile phone or computer.

The 43-year-old said: “Any device in the house can send a message to Twitter about what it is doing. It feels the heartbeat of the house. If you are trying to monitor your energy costs or security, it is a very useful tool.”

    Simple Twitter does wonders

Andy’s new “invention” could be put to greater use, such as for security purposes and monitoring of elderly and children at home. Receiving updates on your house while going for a long vacation is a great incentive to use these Twitter sensors.

The opportunities that Twitter present is bountiful, especially in the hands of geniuses like Andy. I wonder what we can expect next!
