Rocket Internet’s Lazada gets USD100M from existing and new investors

lazada logoLazada, a Rocket Internet online retailer that sells gadgets, lifestyle products, and entertainment content, announced today that it has raised USD 100M from new investor Verlinvest, a Belgian family-owned, consumer-focused investment holding company, as well as existing backers Holtzbrinck Ventures, Kinnevik, Summit Partners and Tengelmann Group.

This comes just a month after Zalora, another Rocket Internet venture, raised USD 100M from investors, of which Verlinvest is also a party.

Launched in Asia in March 2012, Lazada has surpassed one million orders and expanded to Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. It has unveiled a mobile app on Android while an iPhone version is coming soon.

While the financial state of the business is not public, Lazada’s figures are expected to be similar to Zalora’s, with millions poured into marketing and expansion with the hope of achieving profitability in a few years.
