Mixue and friends sprint to SEA

In focus

Hello reader,

What would you do if you were laid off tomorrow?

“I’d open a Mixue franchise,” I told friends who are worried about the weak economy.

I was kidding, of course – selling iced treats out of a kiosk is far beyond my office worker’s skill set. Still, the joke shows how quickly the Chinese F&B brand is spreading across Vietnam and the rest of Southeast Asia.

Mixue isn’t alone – other Chinese companies are moving in fast, too.

Today’s first Top Story looks at how Chinese brands from Miniso to Luckin are spreading aggressively through the region. They’re doing so with highly efficient operational playbooks – not a surprise considering they operate tens of thousands of stores at home.

But unlike China, Southeast Asia is not a single, unified market. Will these brands put in the time to consider local nuances and avoid mistakes others have made before?

That same fixation on speed shows up in my colleague Samreen’s piece on Lyzr, a startup based in India and the US raising money at AI speed.

The firm builds smart agents for companies. Its own agent is called Sam – it’s a Sam Altman-lookalike who helps field investor questions and stream live business data. What’s the goal here? Cutting the time needed to raise capital by tenfold.

The result? Lyzr is lining up a US$15 million series A round, with “soft commitments” from Accenture and BGV.
