Hi there,
Last week was super fun. Tech in Asia had its company offsite in Bali and, as it was my first international trip, I could not keep calm.
I experienced my first underwater dive, tasted my first Nasi Goreng, and booked my first Grab ride (and food delivery order). This made me wonder if other super apps in Southeast Asia are as smooth and user-friendly.
Shopee, for instance, would have been at the top of my list of apps to try had I stayed longer in the region.
Even though the net loss of its parent firm Sea Group has expanded, Shopee’s unit economics have improved significantly “driven by gains in both monetization and efficiency across our markets,” said the company while announcing its June quarter results on Tuesday.
The company, however, said it would suspend forecasts for ecommerce GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) revenue in 2022 to “further strengthen our ability to better capture the long-term growth opportunities in our markets.”
It seems we’re doubling down on Sea Group this week. In our other Big Story, my colleague Melissa brings to you the organization chart of the people steering Shopee toward profitability. And my teammate Deepti breaks down Sea Group’s financials in her visual piece.
As for the Hot Take, I attempt to make sense of Lazada’s latest and most aggressive push into fintech, which can further stir up the never-ending Shopee-Lazada rivalry.
