Latency survey aims to help Philippine players pick suitable subscription plans

Online gaming in the Philippines is a pain, what with having to contend with high subscription rates that range from 999 PHP ($20) per month for 3mbps connections to 4000 PHP ($88) per month for 10mbps. A Philippine player recently decided to do a latency survey to see if these plans are really worth the amount consumers are paying for.

The survey has received 206 respondents from 40 areas around the country as of today. The titles represented in the majority are League of Legends, Dota 2, World of Warcraft, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4.

Buddy Magsipoc, founder of the now defunct pinoystarcraft.com community, is the one who started the survey last year in December. He said the survey was “to help people decide what the best connection in their area is, so that they can switch to the subscription that is best suited for their game in their location.”

According to the data collected, the highest average ping recorded for a player is at 2,615ms, forWorld of Warcraft played on US servers. The lowest average is 10ms, for League of Legends SEA. League of Legends SEA has the highest average ping in Manila, with the lowest ping being in Pateros City. The worst area to play Dota 2 SEA in is Marikina City, which has an average ping of 275ms. First person shooter players will have a hard time fragging people if you’re located at Baguio since Battlefield 3 has an average ping of 280ms for while Battlefield 4 has 225ms for US servers.

However Magsipoc said that the study is far from conclusive. There are still a lot of factors that the survey doesn’t address. Data such as ping rates during peak hours and where each player lives is also needed for a more complete picture of internet connections in the Philippines. While Magsipoc will be reformatting his survey to include more questions, he’s still hoping to collect more data to provide a better and more informative database for players to maximize their game time.
