Jack Ma continues to lie low even as Alibaba leaves regulatory troubles behind
“Chinese billionaire Jack Ma of Alibaba is keeping a low profile and has taken up painting as a hobby, while the tech giant he co-founded has put last year’s regulatory troubles behind it,” South China Morning Post reported, citing the entrepreneur’s close business partner Joseph Tsai.
Details:
- After stepping down as Alibaba’s CEO two years ago, Ma has been focused on his hobbies and philanthropy, Tsai said.
- Tsai also weighed in on Hong Kong’s national security law, saying it has helped bring about stability. He had personally felt unsafe as a Mandarin speaker during the 2019 protests in the city.
Context:
- Ma has been lying low since his remarks about China’s regulatory system in October last year led to regulators halting the Ant Group’s IPO and levying a US$2.8 billion fine on Alibaba following an anti-monopoly probe.
- He surfaced months later in January, appearing in a 50-second video during an online event.
