IPA Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SOLVE) Awards 2011 Launch – 13 Aug

On Aug 13, the  Indonesian Professionals’ Association (IPA) will launch their Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SOLVE) Awards. It is an initiative by IPA to recognize and promote social innovators and social entrepreneurs within Indonesia. The launch of this awards will be in the format of a talk and networking session at the end. Jack Sim of World Toilet Organization (interview with SGE) and Anies Baswedan of Indonesia Mengajar will attend as the speakers.

About the Speakers

Jack Sim, Founder of World Toilet Organization (WTO)
He has been a successful businessman since age 24. Having achieved financial success in his 40s, Jack felt the need to change his direction in life and give back to humanity – he wanted to live his life according to the motto “Live a useful life”. Jack soon left his business and embarked on a journey that saw him being the voice for those who cannot speak out and fighting for the dignity, rights and health for the vulnerable and poor worldwide. In 1998, he established the Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) whose mission was to raise the standards of public toilets in Singapore and around the world. This followed by two other initiatives: the World Toilet Organization (WTO) in 2001 and four years later, the World Toilet College (WTC) in 2005. In 2004, Jack was awarded the Singapore Green Plan Award 2012 by Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) for his contribution to Environment. In 2007, Jack became one of the key members to convene the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) comprised of over 130 organisations active in the sanitation sector. Jack is also an Ashoka Global Fellow and in 2008 was named Hero of the Environment by Time Magazine. Jack also sits in the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Councils (GAC) for Water Security and also the GAC for Social Entrepreneurship.
Anies Baswedan, Initiator and Chairperson of Indonesia Mengajar
Indonesia Mengajar is a growing movement that recruits and enrolls Indonesia’s best university graduates to a one year program teaching elementary schools at Indonesia’s remote areas. Indonesia Mengajar aims to create access to education, and at the same time invest in training and leadership development that help young graduates increase their impact in community. Dr Baswedan holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from Northern Illinois University, a masters degree in Public Policy from University of Maryland School of Public Policy, College Park, and a degree in Business Management from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He has received several distinguished awards, including in May 2008, the US magazine Foreign Policy named him as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world, and the World Economic Forum included him in the 2009 Young Global Leaders. As an advisor to the Indonesian government, he is a leading proponent of democracy and transparency in Indonesia, as well as widely known as a charismatic leader in the educational field.
