Tech in Asia said konnichiwa to more than 1,100 attendees at our first ever Startup Asia Tokyo conference on September 3 and 4 last year. The inaugural event brought together startups, established tech firms, investors, university students, and others for two days of keynotes, fireside chats, and lots of networking. The event culminated with our Arena pitch battle, where restaurant reservation app EZTable took home the grand prize.
We were pleased to welcome two of Silicon Valley’s most high-profile investors to speak at the event: 500 Startups’ Dave McClure and Y Combinator’s Kevin Hale, who shared a stage with Movida Japan’s Taizo Son. Two giants in the Japanese mobile gaming ecosystem – DeNA founder Tomoko Namba and GREE founder Yoshikazu Tanaka – also spoke about their increasingly competitive industry and the necessity of pursuing opportunities in other verticals.
Apart from the event itself, another first for our Startup Asia conference series was the rollout of Office Hour. While we continue to offer Startup-Investor Speed Dating for startups to connect with potential investors, Office Hour connected them with larger corporations from Japan and across the region for future partnerships and collaboration.
