Chinese telecom giant is considering setting up a manufacturing plant in Pakistan, said Huawei VP Tang Qibing during a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, according to Propakistani. The company, which has met with a less-than-friendly reception in India, is now apparently keen to step up its operations in Pakistan. But there’s one thing that still stands in the way: taxes.
As Pakistan’s mobile users already know, taxes in the sector can get ridiculous, and that’s apparently just as true for corporations as it is for everyday users. To set up an operation in Pakistan, Tang said, Huawei would need special duties and tax rates set up for it by the government.
A major investment into hardware manufacturing from Huawei could be a boon for Pakistan’s tech industry, but thus far Pakistan’s government hasn’t proved to be particularly interested in reducing taxes, so whether the country will meet Huawei’s demands is still very much up in the air. For its part, Huawei would probably love to have another manufacturing base in the region; it has plants in India but has been denied domestic manufacturer status there and is currently under investigation.
