Hello readers,

Having everything delivered to our doorsteps has become part of the way people live in the pandemic era. Why run to stores for a carton of milk or a bag of chips when you can order them with a few taps on your phone, right? In Southeast Asia, though, around 50% of online grocery users only developed the habit last year.

As always, it is fascinating to see how quickly technology companies adapt to change. The surge in demand for grocery delivery services has prompted Grab, Lazada, and a slew of lifestyle apps to nab a slice of the pie in Southeast Asia.

For others, the new trend is more of a lifeline. Myanmar-based ride-hailing platform Oway, which saw its core business struggle amid the pandemic, quickly shifted to grocery delivery.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve published several stories about the region’s online grocery boom. This week’s story, however, takes a birds-eye view at the market as well as the key players.

What are your thoughts on online grocery? Do you think it will continue well after the pandemic?
