Indian edtech major Byju’s has denied shutting down coding platform WhiteHat Jr, adding that it was merely being optimized for “organic and efficient growth.”
“As an ongoing activity, we are actively evaluating all our business units to ensure that they are aligned with our path to profitability,” a Byju’s spokesperson told Tech in Asia.
Citing sources, TechCrunch reported that the edtech titan was mulling shutting down WhiteHat Jr as part of its cost-cutting measures.
Byju’s acquired WhiteHat Jr in 2020 for US$300 million. Its founder, Karan Bajaj, left the company a year after the acquisition. The coding platform had let go of 300 full-time employees last year to help reduce burn.
WhiteHat Jr has been criticized for its aggressive approach to attracting students, going as far as suing its vocal opposers. In May 2021, it dropped a US$2.7 million defamation suit against a critic that exposed the company’s internal communications.
