SEA food and grocery delivery spending up 30%: Grab report

Monthly food and grocery delivery spending by consumers in the region was up 30% in May compared to November 2021, according to Grab‘s food and grocery trends report for Southeast Asia in 2022, which is based on a survey conducted by the tech giant in more than 60,000 users in the region.

The report said that in the region, consumers in Singapore spent the most on deliveries, while those in Vietnam ordered most frequently during the period.

“Overall, the top 25% most heavy users contributed close to three-quarters [71%] of the region’s deliveries spending,” wrote the report. Grab claims GrabFood is the most often used brand for food delivery in Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, on average, merchants also saw a 15% jump in total sales revenue than before joining delivery platforms, according to the report. McDonald’s, for instance, saw its sales from deliveries up 30% from 10% of pre-Covid levels.

The report states that delivery services have become a permanent feature for most post-pandemic consumers.

Grab previously reported it hit an EBITDA breakeven in delivery for the third quarter of this year. The sector saw adjusted EBITDA turn positive, accounting for US$9 million compared to the US$22 million in EBITDA loss in the previous year.
