Shopee revokes multiple job offers in Singapore

Ecommerce giant Shopee has withdrawn a number of job offers for positions at its headquarters in Singapore, Pandaily reported.

This has led to the formation of two related rights-protection groups, having over 60 members and over 200 members, respectively, with the second group including employees from other companies offering their support to those affected.

Shopee allegedly may have breached the offer contract as employees had not formally joined the company, which may open the ecommerce firm to claims of potential negligence.

“Due to adjustments to hiring plans on some tech teams, a number of roles at Shopee are no longer available. We are working closely to support those affected,” Shopee told Tech In Asia.

In addition to paying damages, some of those affected have asked for the company to compensate employees for losses based on trust in the company, including costs for onboarding and reduction in property, such as the costs incurred for transportation, travel, and accommodation to travel to Singapore for said onboarding.

Shopee could potentially pay employees with one month’s salary besides other costs such as airfare and hotel bookings.

Update (Aug. 30, 9.10 p.m. SGT): The article was updated with clarifications from Shopee.
