Good Meatโ€™s new protein alternative greenlit in SG

Good Meat, the cultivated-meat division of US-based foodtech firm Eat Just, has won regulatory approval from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) to use serum-free media to produce cultivated meat. Good Meat said the approval is the first of its kind worldwide.

Cultivated meat is a term for animal meat produced by cultivating animal cells directly. The method removes the need to raise and kill animals for food.

However, the protein-alternative still relies on fetal bovine serum (FBS), which is retrieved from traditional meat production. Thatโ€™s why Good Meat decided to develop a serum-free solution.

โ€œRemoving serum from cultivated meat production can drive down costs and set the stage for expanded commercialization of sustainable protein,โ€ said Mirte Gosker, managing director of the Good Food Institute for the Asia Pacific.

The company said it has installed bioreactors in its Singapore production center that can make tens of thousands of pounds of meat.

Before the latest green light, Good Meat had obtained approval from SFA to sell its first chicken-alternative product in the city-state.
