WhatsApp Still Leader Of The Pack In India With Over 20 Million Active Users

Whatsapp in India

US-made messaging app Whatsapp is being chattier than usual today. Aside from adding walkie-talkie style voice messaging to the app – something that WeChat has had for well over a year – Whatsapp has revealed that it has over 20 million active users in India right now.

While it’s a ballpark figure – WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum gave the same number for Germany, Mexico, and Spain – it makes clear that WhatsApp, despite the assault from Asia-made services like Line and WeChat, is still the leader of the pack in this booming sector.

In contrast, Line has over five million registered users in India. Nimbuzz is strong in the nation, but that’s also an IM app that connects with stuff like Yahoo Messenger and Skype. Viber and BBM are other challengers without clear Indian user-numbers, while WeChat is pushing into India via TV ads right now. And don’t forget local challenger GupShup.
