Philippine platform’s NFT drops to honor national artists

Scarletbox, a launchpad for art NFTs from the Philippines, is set to launch with a series of NFT drops honoring two Philippine National Artists.

The platform aims to bring the work of world-class artists to a wider audience. The company said it plans to funnel proceeds from the NFT sales into educational scholarships for younger artists in the fields of visual arts, literature, and performing arts.

Scarletbox is launching its platform with collaborative artworks from awardees of the Order of National Artists of the Philippines, including Jose Joya and Abdulmari Imao. For the artwork, Joya collaborated with his grandnephew, Andre Baldovino, while Abdulmari Imao worked with his son, Toym Imao.

Scarletbox said each of the NFTs would be considered “Founder NFTs,” which will give owners whitelist access to all future drops at a discount. These special versions also come with a box of collectibles, which includes a signed certificate of authenticity, a digital frame of the live artwork, and a token from the artist.

The announcement comes as both consumer and investor interest in NFTs continues to climb. Earlier this month, Ripple, a global payments and blockchain solutions firm, announced its first batch of NFT creators, whom it has backed through its US$250 million creator fund.
