Hello reader,

In the past, whenever I used apps, I often didn’t put much thought into how they worked as I focused more on what a certain feature could do for me.

Sometimes, new updates would come along to shake things up a little, and of course I’d then fall into one of two camps: liking the change or hating it. It was all rather straightforward.

Now that I’ve been around the tech scene for a while, I’ve become a little more aware of how these apps work, as well as the amount of effort and thought that goes into them.

Little things like a UI change, for instance, can go a long way in helping users achieve a certain goal. Maybe adding a specific feature can make the overall customer experience much smoother.

These things matter, which is why it’s important to have product managers who know what they’re doing – and there’s few out there better than Yuhki Yamashita, chief product officer at design platform Figma.

Today’s premium story recaps his keynote session at Tech in Asia’s recent Product Development Conference, where he shared lots of personal experiences and insights.

Today we look at:

  • Figma’s CPO on building magical products
  • Viddsee’s strategy in the competitive video-streaming space
  • Other newsy highlights such as GoTo’s CEO stepping down and WhatsApp rolling out a new feature in Singapore

The secret product ingredient

Product Development Conference just ended and I was super jealous because I wasn’t able to go. By all accounts – social media, that is – it was a fully packed event across both days, with top speakers from all over the world taking the stage to share what product development is all about. One of them is Yuhki Yamashita, Figma’s chief product officer.

  • Big boss: Yamashita heads Figma’s product and design teams. Before taking on the role, he had stints at Uber and YouTube.
  • Measuring happiness: One of the key points Yamashita made during his speech was that great products naturally drive high user engagement. Product managers can set and measure key metrics for this, but the tricky part is drawing the link between user happiness and revenue generated.
  • The end goal: Ultimately, product managers should understand that they don’t always need to be “verifiably correct,” Yamashita says. “[Their role] is to take informed risks and build the right things.”
