Coins.ph names ex-Binance CFO as new chief exec

Wei Zhou, the former Binance CFO, was named as the new CEO of Coins.ph after a consortium he leads – along with buyout fund Joffre Capital – purchased the Philippine-based digital wallet from Gojek for US$200 million.

Zhou brings with him 20 years of experience in the financial sector, which will be important as Coins.ph looks to launch new crypto products and services within 2022.

“We have seen digital assets and Web3 applications impact everyday life in the Philippines and are honored to have the opportunity to build fully regulated products and services that will enable financial freedom for our users,” said Zhou.

Coins.ph was founded in 2014 by Ron Hose, who left the company in 2020. About 16 million users transact with the firm’s digital wallet, payment, and cryptocurrency services.

The firm is also eyeing sponsoring events, while pursuing user engagement and financial literacy initiatives.
