Sources: Indian edtech leader Byju’s to acquire rival Toppr for $150m

“India’s biggest e-learning startup, Byju’s, is close to signing a deal to acquire rival Toppr Technologies in a transaction valued at roughly US$150 million,” reported Bloomberg, citing sources privy to the situation.

Details:

  • Details of the acquisition haven’t been finalized yet, said the source.
  • It comes after Byju’s acquired coding education platform WhiteHat Jr. for US$300 million in August 2020 and signed a deal to absorb brick-and-mortar test prep leader Aakash Educational Services for US$1 billion earlier in January.

Context:

  • Toppr is an after-school learning app that provides learning courses and entrance exam tutoring. It’s backed by SAIF Partners and Eight Roads Ventures.
  • Byju’s, the leading online learning platform in India, was valued at around US$10.8 billion after it raised an undisclosed amount of funding led by Silver Lake in September 2020.
