ByteDance launches ‘interest matching’ function on China’s TikTok

Douyin, the Chinese version of short-video app TikTok, has launched an “interest matching” function that enables users who are watching the same video to socialize with each other, Pandaily reported, citing local media Tech Planet.

The new function matches users with each other and gives them the chance to interact through chat or video meetings. The short video becomes the chat window background on which users can send text, emojis, and other forms of content.

Users can employ the matching function five times a day. If they are unable to match with other users, they can interact with friends by invitation. Users can either chat anonymously or with their public identities in the platform, according to a Gamingsym report.

In December 2021, Douyin parent company ByteDance ended the operations of interest-based social app Feiliao, moving its product team to other internal projects. The platform, known as Flipchat in other markets, had been experiencing server issues and had not received updates for more than a year.
