Companies are using internal hackathons to enable employees to escape the grind of routine work and experiment with novel ideas. SingTel (SGX:Z74), Singapore’s largest telco, is no exception: the Group will be organizing its very own internal hackathon in November for 100 individuals.
The inaugural event, called L!feSpark, will be held from November 7 to 9 (Thursday to Saturday), which means SingTel employees won’t have to burn their entire weekend on a side project.
Facilitated by startup incubator Pollenizer, the hackathon is calling for designing, marketing, product management, and engineering talent from its pool of 20,000 personnel.
The event will be focused on tools that can solve “longer-term and aspirational goals” for SingTel’s key business units: Group Consumer, Group Enterprise (and NCS), and Group Digital Life. Five problem statements will be unveiled one week before the commencement of L!feSpark.
Three winning teams will be picked alongside a people’s choice award. The top team will win a three month attachment with Pollenizer in Sydney to work on their business idea. The next two will get S$15,000 ($12,000) to further their projects.
On hand to decide the winners are four judges: Allen Lew, SingTel’s chief officer for Singapore, Trevor Healy, CEO of Amobee, Thomas Clayton, CEO of Bubbly, and Tan Yinglan, partner at Sequoia Capital.
