Docomo Demos Mobile Simultaneous Translation System [Video]

At Wireless Expo 2011 Docomo was showcasing its Mobile Simultaneous Translation System. The demonstration that I saw processed spoken Japanese input, then transcribed it into Japanese text, and then translated that into English text. But it can do English-to-Japanese as well.

You see the process happening on the screen of your mobile device, and while it does appear a little slow the results seem impressive. Docomo tells me that all the processing takes place on its network, rather than locally on the device. See the video below for a quick video walkthrough of how it works.

Of course there are other live translation apps already available, but it’s good to see even more parties working to solve an important problem.
