The famous global startup ecosystem ranking is back, but it needs more data from Singapore

compass

Compass – a company that aims to be the “moneyball” for startups – stirred up a lot of debate when it launched its worldwide ranking of startup ecosystems in 2012. While unprecedented in its ambition and scope, it generated heated discussion, particularly in its Asian coverage.

Singapore, for instance, ranked ahead of India’s tech capital Bangalore. And although Australia faced a venture capital drought, it was right in the mix with these two Asian cities. Beijing is a notable absentee in the rankings – due to the lack of data.

Ecosystems were ranked based on several variables. The 2012 report looked at the availability of funding and talent, the adopting of new technologies by startups, the mindset of entrepreneurs, and other factors.

The next edition of the startup ecosystem report, due to be released later this year, hopes to fix the Asian data gap. While the 2012 report compiled data on 40 cities, the current one will have data on over 100 cities in 40 countries.

Compass needs help from entrepreneurs though, particularly in Singapore. They’re still short of the 100 completed surveys in the country needed to provide an accurate representation of the country.

So if you’re a startup founder in Singapore or elsewhere (the more data, the better), do help by filling up this form.
