The center, called RGE-NTU SusTex, aims to bolster innovation in textile recycling and apply research outcomes to solve real-world problems. It will focus on four main areas: sustainable textile recycling, automated textile waste sorting systems, eco-friendly dye removal, and new textile development.

Researchers at the S$6 million (US$4.3 million) joint center will study the chemical makeup of various textile materials to develop processes and solutions needed for a circular textile economy.

Established in 1973, RGE is a producer of sustainable natural fibers, edible oils, green packaging, and clean natural gas. The company has total assets of over US$25 billion and employs 60,000 staff across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

According to estimates, 92 million tons of textile waste are dumped into the environment each year. Meanwhile, only 12% of the material used for the production of clothes gets recycled. The global textile industry accounts for 10% of total carbon emissions, more than international flights and maritime shipping combined.
