The 7 types of gamers you can date (for girls!)

The types of gamers you can date, directly inspired by this post on Thought Catalog.

You can date a World of Warcraft player. He’ll be there for your every raid and world event, in whatever form you need. He’ll know the game so well he’ll be your walking WoWWiki, and will have characters of multiple classes so you’ll never be left hanging. He’ll be your tank, your heals, your everything, and you’ll speak the same lingo and laugh at the same jokes. Once a week you’ll both emerge from your rooms and meet up in real life. From the snowy slopes of the Kun-Lai Summit he’ll emerge as an ordinary bloke, half smiling, half struck with social anxiety. He won’t know what to do in real life except to play the game more.

You can date a ‘bro’ gamer. He’ll be a console gamer with a penchant for shooters, and will have his controller. He’ll live for Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Halo, and will never be able to point a scope with a mouse. His Xbox will be his constant companion, but at least you know you’ll always be his Player Two. He’ll know what to do when you go out, though. Because his ‘bronsole’ demands less attention than a raid of twenty five men, he’ll pay for your meal and lend you his jacket in a movie.

You can date an FPS player. He’ll be loud and noisy, and will be tighter with his band of brothers than he ever will be with you. He’ll be sharp and witty, smart and smart-assed, and sometimes he’ll be rougher than you prefer. Behind doors he’ll be tender and attentive, though his macho guise will be slipped back on before you face the world together. He’ll hold your hand when you least expect it, but he’ll never send you flowers nor carry your handbag. Real men don’t do that, and you’ll be so smitten with him you’ll agree.

You can date a fighting game player. He’ll be as loud as the FPS player and perhaps filled with even more bravado. His local arcade will be his usual haunt, and you can expect to spend many date nights sitting in there watching him play. He’ll love the girl who will praise his moves, but he’ll love her more if she can name them (or beat him!). If he’s a good player, he’ll constantly be on the road for tournaments. You can choose to join him or cheer him on on stream. And wherever it is, the community will welcome you. One thing’s for sure, though. He’ll know how to use those fingers.

You can date a social gamer. His closest contact with games will be Clash of Clans or some Facebook-game-equivalent, and he won’t understand when you talk to him about Dovahkiin or Dota 2. He’ll try his best to, and that will be endearing, but his interest won’t hold for long. He’ll be happier exploring a future together in an MMORPG called Life. Sometimes he’ll get upset that you prefer spending more time in-game than with him. Sometimes you’ll get upset that he doesn’t game, forgetting that you dated him for that reason in the first place.

You can date a game exec, the kind of guy who doesn’t just play games – but lives them. He could be a developer or a public relations guy, or he could be a games journalist. He’d be worldly and decently-paid, but he’ll be kind of a dick, and sometimes you’ll hate his sense of entitlement. When you’re done with him you’ll worry what the industry will think of you – if he’ll ever kiss and tell.

Or you could date the man who plays the same games you do, the one who stops when you stop, and shares the newest release with you so you won’t both have to fork out for it. You’ll play all sorts of games together, but never the most painful relationship ones.

He’ll ditch his core raid for your birthday but still call you out on your bullshit when you yell at the game for making you lose. You’ll be close like you were buddies, but still make out like lovesick teenagers. He’ll buy you little geeky accessories off Etsy and surprise you right when you least expect it. He’ll carry your bag if your fat PS3 is inside, and when he lets you win, he’ll never tell.

At the end of the day, a gamer might not be the one for you. You might tire of their childishness, their egos, their incessant whining about the game being broken. You’ll move on to date other men – the banker, the firefighter, the teacher. But you’ll never forget the man who took you up the slopes of Crystalsong Forest and took a screenshot of you there. Nor will you forget the man with whom you spent countless of hours building castles in the Battle.net sky. Those are save games no one can erase.
