Gojek rolls out ride-hailing service for four-wheelers in Vietnam

Indonesian internet giant Gojek has introduced its ride-hailing service for four-wheeler vehicles in Vietnam, which will initially be available exclusively to frontline healthcare workers in Ho Chi Minh City.

The launch of the service, named GoCar, comes amid an ongoing Covid-19 crisis in the city, with new cases earlier this month reaching 3,341 a day.

In cooperation with Vietnam’s Department of Transportation and Department of Health, GoCar will be launching with a fleet of 50 vehicles which will be responsible for moving healthcare workers from five hospitals and medical command centers in the city.

GoCar’s first users will be offered complimentary access to its premium service, GoCar Protect, which includes enhanced safety and hygiene features.

All driver-partners are also required to follow health and hygiene protocols, which includes taking a polymerase chain reaction test before their first trip and on a weekly basis after that, wearing personal protective equipment, and adhering to the practice of Vietnam’s local Covid-19 guidelines.

“We have made all the necessary preparations to launch GoCar this year,” said Gojek Vietnam General Manager Duc Phung. “When the situation is safer – and restrictions are eased – we will of course extend the GoCar offering to the wider public.”

GoCar is Gojek’s latest offering in Vietnam, coming after the company’s motorbike-hailing (GoRide), parcel delivery (GoSend), and online food delivery (GoFood) services.

The new launch follows reports saying GoTo, the entity formed after the merger of Gojek and Tokopedia, is looking to raise as much as US$2 billion ahead of its potential IPO in Indonesia.
