Indonesia’s Cloud Computing Summer Camp

Learning about cloud computing in the outdoors… Sounds like a very geeky way to spend your summer, right? Well this past weekend an Indonesian IT literacy youth group, KermIT, held its IT Camp 2011 at the Mount Bunder Camping Ground, West Java.

This year the IT Camp was themed “Cloud Computing and Open BTS – New inexpensive Technologies to make your life enjoyable.” The camp was limited to only 200 people, although many more wanted to participate. Teenagers and IT professionals from all over Indonesia gathered and shared their knowledge through games, team activities, and training.

Participants received various materials on cloud computing to supplement the daily activities, and they were also instructed on how to build cellular base stations as a solution for efficient telecommunications in remote areas. The camp material was presented by well-known Indonesian IT experts such as Onno W. Purbo, and also supported by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, the Ministry of Research and Technology, and other media.

IT expert, Muhammad Salahuddien explained:

Outdoor activities like this could accelerate the participants understanding of the materials and they also can interact directly with content providers in a more convenience and familiar way.

KermIT had previously held IT Camp twice before. In 2009, they focused on internet network training, and in 2010 the camp focused on hackers and hacking. IT learning activities like these are certainly a very positive way to help young Indonesians learn more about technology, and we hope to see more like it in the future.
