AWS to invest $5b in Indonesia to set up cloud region

Global cloud service firm Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a new cloud region in Indonesia called Asia Pacific (Jakarta). It allows the company’s customers to store their data in the country and serve local consumers with lower latency.

A cloud region is the geographical location where the data or cloud centers are physically situated.

AWS also plans to invest around US$5 billion in Indonesia over the next 15 years, which includes spending for the construction of data centers, maintenance, and operational purposes. It estimated that the infrastructure will result in 24,700 direct and indirect jobs annually during the period.

The company entered Indonesia with an office in 2018, which provides technical support to its customers. In March, AWS launched an edge location of Amazon CloudFront, its content delivery network, in the country.

The Amazon subsidiary currently counts several Indonesian unicorns as its customers, including Tokopedia, Traveloka, and FinAccel.
