In brief: Alibaba may focus on smaller deals in India, sources say
- Alibaba is reviewing its India investment strategy and could take a more judicious approach by making more vertical ecommerce investments and smaller early-stage deals, three people aware of the matter said, Livemint reported.
- The potential change follows Alibaba’s disappointments in some of its large ecommerce investments, such as those of Snapdeal and Paytm Mall, which have lagged behind industry leaders Flipkart and Amazon.
- The Economic Times recently reported that Paytm Mall’s deep discounting strategy and losses made Alibaba realize that Paytm’s volumes – driven largely by cashbacks – would not make it a sustainable business.
- Alibaba’s Indian investments are overseen by Raghav Bahl, who was appointed in August. However, the ecommerce giant also launched a US$100 million venture capital fund called BAce Capital, which is anchored by its payment arm Ant Financial.
