The Industrial Revolution took 144 years to mature, but the AI revolution will achieve a similar economic transformation in a fraction of that time. Sequoia Capital partner Konstantine Buhler frames this compressed event as a US$10 trillion “cognitive revolution”.

Buhler lays out a roadmap for the cognitive revolution by first mapping the five key trends defining the landscape today, then revealing the five investment themes where the markets of tomorrow will be won.

AI will expand the services economy beyond automation

AI presents an opportunity to resize the market itself. The cloud transformation serves as a historical precedent, where the total software market nearly doubled as SaaS solutions created new value and unlocked new customer segments.

The cloud transformation is the model for market expansion.
According to Buhler, “What happened is not only did software as a service increase its share of the on-prem software market, it actually expanded the entire market growing to over US$650 billion today. We believe something similar is going to happen in artificial intelligence”.

AI targets a vastly larger market.
“[This is an] even bigger opportunity,” Buhler notes. “This is the US$10 trillion US services market of which maybe US$20 billion or so today is automated by AI. This is the US$10 trillion opportunity to not only grow the share of this pie, but grow the pie itself”.

This will create new market leaders.
Buhler emphasizes that “the cognitive revolution offers an opportunity to expand the market and expand [the list of the world’s largest public companies] to include many large standalone public companies built around AI in the services space”.

The industrial revolution’s specialization bottleneck is gone

The industrial revolution required 144 years to move from the first factory to an efficient assembly line because of the slow pace of specialization. The cognitive revolution will compress this timeline, with today’s startups leading the charge on specialization.

The delay was caused by the need to specialize.
Buhler states, “The reason why it [industrial revolution] took so long is the specialization imperative. Beyond a certain scale, for a complex system to mature, it must combine general purpose components and labor with highly specialized components and labor”.

Today’s startups are accelerating this process.
He believes, “It is the startups of today that are carrying out this specialization imperative, and the startups that have yet to be formed that will build those applications”.

The five trends defining AI today

Buhler’s framework for navigating the AI landscape first identifies five key trends already in motion. These trends show that the nature of knowledge work is being redefined around scaled leverage rather than perfect certainty, with the focus shifting from academic benchmarks to real-world performance.

The new gold standard is real-world performance.
Buhler states, “Today, if you want to prove excellence, you prove it in the real world. We’ve noticed that this is the new gold standard, not just academic benchmarks, but real-world measurement.”.
