Acquia Looking to Spread the Word of Drupal in Asia

I’m reading a couple of reports this evening (Economic Times, e27) that Drupal development company Acquia, founded by Dries Buytaert, the creator of the open source website software, is making a tour of Asia in an effort to spread the gospel of Drupal.

I’ve used Drupal on a couple of my own simple projects after finding WordPress falling short in some functions. I’m glad to see that Acquia is doing well and looking to expand, because Drupal can be a great way for people in Asia (or anywhere else) to build powerful websites, services, or even social networks in some cases.

Drupal is free (as in beer) for anyone to use, though it has an infamous ‘learning curve’ (say what?) that you’ll need to tackle, and less-than-stellar documentation if you want to learn it — at least in my experience. But that’s where Acquia’s services and technical support comes in.

They’re looking to ‘scale up massively in India’ (according to The Economic Times report above) because as the internet population in the country increases — it recently surpassed the 100 million mark — then there will be more demand there for developers who can build websites. And for anyone who has the dev skills, Drupal provides the potential to create complex and powerful websites for little to no cost.

For more info, check out the video below showing Dries’ talk in Singapore (h/t e27). Or, for perhaps an even more interesting discussion, have a look at this interview from a couple of weeks back with Dries and WordPress creator Matt Millenweg.
