As 3G grows and 4G prepares to take Asia by storm, 2G subscriptions are dropping almost everywhere. In Taiwan, the nation’s National Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that 2G subscribers have dropped to just over 5 million even as 3G subscriptions climbed above 23 million. That makes more than 80 percent of the nation’s wireless subscriptions 3G plans, and it seems likely that within a year or two, there could be virtually no 2G subscribers left on the island.
Of course, that’s not a bad thing! And it’s also worth mentioning that NCC’s numbers, while official, are a little baffling, as the Commission reports that Taiwan has significantly more mobile subscriptions (28.72 million) than it has people. Apparently millions of people in Taiwan have multiple mobile subscriptions, many of them mobile 3G subscriptions. I guess Taiwan really loves 3G!
Although Taiwan is well ahead in terms of per capita 3G penetration, neighboring China is following a similar path, with 3G subscriptions growing at a rapid pace. In China, 2G still reigns supreme, but if Taiwan’s growth patterns are any indication, the technology’s days are probably numbered.
