6 student startups scoring top grades at Tech in Asia Jakarta’s Bootstrap Alley

Universities make good breeding grounds for ideas. No wonder, with all the bright, inspired, and young minds gathered there – although many of those ideas fizzle out for lack of patience and perseverance.

There are a few occasions where these sparks of inspiration outlive hostel rooms and canteen, and its founders venture far enough to dip their toes in the entrepreneurial world.

We have scoured far and wide across Indonesia to bring you some of these promising startups that have made the leap from mere ideas brainstormed on college grounds, to viable companies that are slowly shaping the tech scene of Asia.

Here are six student startups you can catch at Tech in Asia’s Bootstrap Alley, happening on November 11 and 12.

Infodiskon

InfoDiskon is an interactive discount app that helps users find local discount information easily by aggregating it all in one platform. It currently features four categories: apparels, food, events, and “exclusive” – where the startup works directly with Indonesian local brands to work out special deals just for its users.

The Jakarta-based startup launched the app a mere three months ago, and has since seen over 1,500 downloads with a 30 percent active user rate.

Founder Daniel Wijaya Lim is from Bina Nusantara University.

Tanzilsoft

Tanzilsoft is a point of sales application that wants to help simplify a store owner’s work. It allows users to approve payments, track inventory, and generate reports on past transactions – all in one place.

Currently still in its beta version, the startup operates on a freemium model, allowing their users a limited number of transactions before it starts to charge per transaction – to ensure that users are only paying for what they actually use. They also include the option of purchasing unlimited transactions on a monthly or yearly basis.

Cakra App

Cakra is a startup on a mission to create a more inclusive society by embracing those diagnosed with autism. Its app complements autism therapy is a complement therapy application for autism through the use of interactive technology that can help develop a child’s motor skills. People diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, ADD, ADHD, Down syndrome, and intellectual disability can also stand to benefit from its use.

The social enterprise works closely with a therapist, ensuring that all changes in their application are validated professionally. The therapy provided by the app comes in two modes – freestyle and structured mode, with three levels within each: basic, intermediate, and advanced, to provide a holistic and comprehensive learning platform.
Founder Nurul Wakhidatul Ummah is a student of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember.

Tulungin

We usually don’t pay too much attention to our home appliances – until they break down that is. Then it’s a frenzy of trying to find a reliable plumber or electrician who can attend to our emergency at the last minute. Tulungin is a search and discovery platform that wants to connect you to professionals for any and all home appliance problems within 24 hours.

Still in beta mode, Tulungin claims to already service 50 users every day, averaging at 200,000 RP (US$14.69) per transaction.

Founder Fandi Setiawan is currently enrolled at Bina Nusantara University.

AdaAcara

AdaAcara is a platform that provides information on activities that are becoming increasingly popular amongst university students in Indonesia, such as exchange programs, forums, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
The service allows event organizers to list and publicise their activities to university students for free. The startup had its public launch in April this year and as of August, has been accessed by over 14,500 visitors – averaging at 3,000 visitors per month.

The startup is working towards being the bridge that connects event organizers and university students and facilitate information flow.

Booku

Booku was built to eliminate the risk of misplacing or damaging important documents. The mobile app allows users to easily create digital copies of physical documents by snapping a picture of a page and downloading the processed image in the preferred file formats. It also offers the option of storing documents securely in the cloud.

Following the launch a few weeks ago, the team is working to develop handwriting recognition technology to convert all scanned text into a word document. In addition, the startup also plans to expand its software innovation to include other types of media beyond text.
