500 Startups invests in Indian healthtech firm Clinikk in pre-series A round

Clinikk, a Bengaluru-based insurtech and healthtech startup, announced that it has raised an undisclosed amount in a pre-series A round led by fintech venture capital firm Emphasis Ventures (EMVC).

Times Internet, 500 Startups’ Southeast Asia-focused 500 Durians fund, WEH Ventures, and First Principles also participated in the round, along with angel investors including Anjali Joshi, former product vice president at Google.

Founded in 2016, Clinikk integrates primary care with health insurance on its platform. It provides family health insurance coverage, telemedicine consultations, personal assistance, and select offerings at its in-person primary care centers.

The company claims that it has grown its subscriber base by 40% quarter on quarter and projects that it will have at least 300,000 new subscribers within the next three months.

The platform currently covers over 500,000 people across India, with 95% of its subscribers using Clinikk as their first point of contact for healthcare matters, said Clinikk co-founder Suraj Baliga in a statement.

During Covid-19, the company formed partnerships with platforms such as Rebel Foods and Ola and implemented a telemedicine hotline with the state government of Goa. It also claims to deliver the “first” comprehensive Covid-19 insurance protection coverage in the country.

“The financial and health benefits of insurance have yet to reach mass adoption in India. For that to happen, entire systems need to be reimagined from the ground up, and that is exactly what Clinikk is doing through its innovations in pricing, delivery, payments, and digital distribution,” said EMVC founder Melissa Frakman.
