Henek Lo is the founder and CEO of Hype, a group of venture builders that directly helps startups in their expansion into Asia. He used to be a general manager at WeWork and Airbnb, leading their global expansions. After struggling to find the right strategy and partners to aid the respective companies’ expansions, he realized the opportunity to start his own company.
Here, Lo shares his story, what Hype is all about, and the exciting trends he’s seeing in Asia.
Tell us about your industry background.
In 2011, two of my good friends told me about Airbnb. They were close to hitting unicorn status; they were already a very large startup in the US but didn’t have much brand awareness in Asia. I was kind of stalking the company for a while and when I finally saw an opportunity, I put my hand up. I became their first employee in Asia as head of sales.
I did many roles in the company. We opened the Asia hub in Singapore and the offices in Korea and Japan. In late 2013, I moved myself to Beijing to launch the landing operations in China.
Then, I wanted to come back to Hong Kong and there was this high-growth company called WeWork that was expanding to Asia at the time. I joined their landing team, and we launched in Hong Kong, Seoul, and Sydney. That was the last six years of my life.
